Our addition was on the second floor at the back of the house. In this pic you can see the part in the middle--we tore all of that off and extended the outer walls all the way out on both sides so that it lines up with the lower level. 
This was the existing room that we tore off. It didn't go much further than you can see on either side. 
My favorite room!! I originally thought that I'd have to get more clothes to fill up my closet space, but as you can see, I didn't have any trouble with what I've got! Yikes!
You can enter the bathroom from the hallway we created as well as through the closet...So we can go from our bedroom through the closet into the bathroom.
